I was never taught obligatorily to use or withhold the Oxford comma, but I use it anyway. It has applications with spoken cadence, being aesthetic, and minimizing confusion.

I never write commas before 'and'. It's a concatenate conjunction and commas mustn't be written before those conjunctions.

Yes, I'm a grammar nazi and proud to be one.

I've always been taught to use the Oxford Comma, ever since.... Maybe fifth grade? And now I'm so used to using it, I tend to flinch whenever books don't use it because it's so weird not seeing it used. ^^; Plus, I hate how people don't even bother to use spell check when they're typing on the computer, it shouldn't be that much harder to spell things out. Makes me wonder how much lazier people are getting these days. :noes:

Belated thought for those that disagree.

The people who would agree with me are my parents, Nelson Mandala and Indira Ghandi.

My teachers taught us that it was NOT an optional thing, YOU *MUST* USE THE OXFORD COMMA. Then some kids heard otherwise and dropped it. ;_;

It just makes everything neater and more organized when you use it. What if no one wrote in paragraphs? o_o

hahahahaha!!!

this is excellent!

I am going through my masters at the moment and taking out so many Oxford Commas cause I was told too - I didn't know that there was a rule that allows it to be something of its own accord.

Marvelous work!!! Clever yet not smarmy.

Love it.

Excellent. I have far too many people telling me to drop the extra comma before 'and'. It drives me a little crazy when I have to explain that I was taught to use the oxford comma. :P

Thank God.

I always shake my head when I read a list that does not make use of the Oxford comma. It just isn't right to avoid it. It's wrong, I tell you. WRONG!

I wonder how many people even know what the Oxford comma is. :(

You know, I never knew until now what an Oxford comma was. However, I use it all the time.
Now I have something to link people to when they get on my case about it! Yay!
In any case, I adore this.

My first few essays at Oxford were marked down for omitting our own comma - oh, what a naive 18 year old I was...

I still feel that the "Oxford Comma" would make an excellent name for a subspecies of butterfly. (The Comma, a small orange-brown butterfly, is found around here...)

When you have a list, it's the comma that comes before the "and."

X, Y, and Z. :)

Is there a 'reason' for it being called the "Oxford comma"?
